Departmental History

About the Department:
The Department of Urdu was established since the inception of college since 2016. The Department of Urdu works to drive a better understanding of Urdu Language and Literature and try its best towards students and Surrounding because Learning Urdu is essential in today’s world for several reasons. Firstly Urdu is one of the most widely spoken Languages, with millions of speakers in Countries like India, Pakistan and several other South Asian regions. By Learning Urdu, students can effectively communicate and connect with a diverse and vast Population. Knowing and command of Urdu can provide significant common Professional and advantages. Urdu Proficiency can enhance students Professional Profile and broaden their career prospects in ẩn increasing inter connected world.

The department always tried to expose the students to the aesthetics of Urdu literature and language. This trend had been carried out since the inception of the college. The department always helped the students to bring out the talent and creative abilities among the students. The department of Urdu and the assistant teachers believe in fostering literary sensibilities among the students.

The Urdu Department is presently offering Undergraduate Honours Degree Course. The department of Urdu is committed and devoted to educating a new generation scholar who will reflect the diversity of intellectual prospectives, life experiences and cultural backgrounds represented in society today.

The Department consistently endeavours to expose students to the profoundly valuable aesthetics of Urdu literature and language. This has remained a steadfast tradition since the establishment of our esteemed College. The department actively nurtures student talent and creative abilities, with assistance from experienced faculty members within the Department of Urdu. Our departmental philosophy endorses fostering literary sensibilities in order for students to develop into accomplished writers themselves or cultivate an understanding and appreciation towards poetic expression arts.

History of the Department:
The Department of Urdu Started in July 2016 Academic year in the College. The Department started its journey with one permanent faculty member, 24 honours under graduate Students. Being an affiliated College under the University of Calcutta, the department in the Academic Session 2016-2017, started teaching the annual system course offered by The University for Undergraduate-honours. Students on from 2018-2019 Academic Sessions the department started teaching the semester based CBCS Course offered by the University of Calcutta together with the annual System. The annual system course curriculum continued upto 2019- 2020 Academy Session. Second permanent faculty of the department join this colloge on September 2022.

The Guest teachers from different universities and colleges have held to running from the beginning. The department seeks their advice and guidance for functioning it. Prof. (Dr.) Shamim Anwar, former professor, Dept. of Urdu, Calcutta University, Prof. (Dr.) S.M. Shabbar, former Professor, P.G. Dept of Urdu, Hooghly Mohsin College, Renowned Urdu short story writer Mrs. Shahirakhatoon Prof. Abu Baker Jeelani, Former Associate professor, Dept. of Urdu, Khidderpore college. have served their experience as guest lecturer in Dept. of Urdu, they gave a new dimension to the department.

Special lecture was delivered by Prof. Ghulam Haider, Former Professor, Dept. of Urdu, Calcutta University, Mr. Md. Mushtaq, Ex-guest Professor Dept of Urdu, HiralalMajumdar Memorial for girls, Dr. Shaheen Parveen, Assistant Professor of Dept. of Urdu, Shri Shikshayatan College, Dr. Zahida Praveen, Assistant Professor (SACT) Dept. of Urdu, B.C. College Asansol, Dr. Nakhat Jahan, Guest teacher, Dept. of Urdu, KaziNazrul University, have delivered their lectures on History of Urdu language and Literature.

Miss SanufaShakil, one of the Alumni members of Government Girls’ General Degree College (Dept. Of Urdu) and Dr. Aftab Alam have taken classes on honorary basis at present.

Seminar and symposium are arranged time to time for the benefit of students. Extension lectures have been organised in which many renowned professor, scholar from different universities and colleges participated. Extension lectures delivered by Rof. S.M. Shabbir (HMC), Dr. Abuzar Hashmi, Additional Librarian of National Library, Dr. Farzana Shaheen, Assistant Professor, Dept of Urdu, Ranigunj Girls’ College, Dr. NadimAhmad, Assistant Professor, Dept of Urdu, Calcutta University.

Students Seminar also arranged by the Dept. Students are presented their research paper in students seminar and very actively participated and focus the different aspects of Urdu Language and Literature.

Students are also participated in seminar outside colleges in West Bengal Urdu Academy, Aliah University and Moulana Azad College. Students are also actively participating in Departmental Half-yearly Wall Magazine entitled “KIRAN”. Students also wrote their thought in College Magazine.

Department of Urdu received donated books from West Bengal Urdu Academy in 2017 and 2020, total no. of books are given WBUA is and Ghalib Institute, New Delhi donated 49 books in 2022 on the great poet Mirza Ghalib. These books are very useful and good resources to know the different aspect of Urdu Language and Literature to the students.

Certificate course (three months) opened by Department of Urdu & Persian, GGGDC entitled “Learn Urdu and Persian to know History” from 03/07/2023 in collaboration with HiralalMazumder Memorial College for women.
