Academics

Departmental History

Department of Chemistry, Government Girls’ General Degree College, affiliated to University of Calcutta was established in 2016-17 academic session with two faculty members Dr.Bhaswati Bhattacharya (HOD) and Dr.Mumu Chakraborty, both with specialization in Organic Chemistry and one laboratory assistant Mr.Kartik Chandra Das. Students of the first batch were Rushda Amin, Saba Noor Khan and Roushni Firdous. Within one year, the department became well equipped with sophisticated instruments, three laboratories, ICT enabled classroom and seminar library. During lockdown (session 2020-21 and 2021-22) both the teachers continued their classes in online mode and students from this department prepared sanitizer under the supervision of Dr.Mumu Chakraborty and distributed it in local shops and police station. After lockdown full-fledged offline classes started. Students from this department also go to Moulana Azad College and Asutosh College for attending lectures and practical classes on Physical and Inorganic Chemistry. A number of good students passed out from this departments with more than 75% marks and many of them have now completed or perusing master degree course. Few of them are also doing job in different educational institutes.

In 2021, Mr.Kartik Chakdra Das retired and Mr.Tuhin Chowdhuri took the charge as laboratory assistant. From 2023, Dr.Mumu Chakraborty took the charge as Head of this department and continuing in the same post. Both the teachers from of this department got promotions while working in this college. Every year, teachers from this department perform multiple university assignments. Since 2017, this department has organised many seminars under the supervision of Dr.Mumu Chakraborty. Hope in future, this department will flourish more.

Participative Learning:
Students of chemistry department participated in seminars and also presented posters on specified topics.

Use of ICT Tools:
  • Teachers use power point presentation in classroom.
  • Google classroom has been formed for every semester for slow as well as advanced learners.
  • Suitable you tube videos are shared regularly in different topics on theory and practical.
Mechanism of Internal/External assessment:
As per university rule

Grievance Redressal System:
  • Students give letter to HOD.
  • A meeting is arranged with the student, accused, eye witness and all the departmental teachers.
  • If the problem is not solved in this departmental meeting, then another meeting is arranged with the Principal and all the above persons.
  • Verification of the grievance is done.
  • Necessary action is taken against the accused.
